Is Feidir Linn

Building an alternative economic and political model for Ireland

Is Feidir Linn is a group of individuals concerned with community development, social inclusion, anti-poverty and equality issues which is exploring what an alternative economic and social development model for Ireland would look like, and what would be needed to gain support for its implementation.
Is Feidir Linn grew from work commissioned by the Community Platform: a conference, in April 2008, Funding and the Strings Attached, and the publication of A Better Ireland is Possible, in December 2008.

Is Feidir Linn's launched a manifesto at: 'Shaping Our Future: developing a vision for an inclusive, equal and sustainable Ireland' (in collaboration with the Community Platform) in June 2009.

This site aims to facilitate discussion on that Manifesto and the action required to implement its vision and values in Ireland.

A wage to live in dignity: a case for a higher minimum wage in the UK

Sympathetic obituarists of New Labour will struggle to identify in its legacy a true step forward for social justice: it has certainly put this concept back on the political agenda, yet social inequalities remain as great in many respects as those inherited in 1997. Yet one of the most striking developments of the past 10 years has been the emergence of a concept resonant of old Labour and the cause of the trade unions – a living wage.… Continue

Stiglitz-Sen Commission

French President Sarkozy established a Commission including Nobel Prize-winners Professor Joseph E. Stiglitz, Columbia University and Professor Amartya Sen, Harvard University to look at the adequacy of current measures of economic performance, in particular those based on GDP figures. In particular to look at broader concerns about the relevance of GDP figures as measures of societal well-being, as well as measures of economic, environmental, and social sustainability.

Its aim is to identify the limits of GDP as an indicator of economic performance and social progress, to consider additional information required for the production of a more relevant picture, to discuss how to present this information in the most appropriate way, and to check the feasibility of measurement tools proposed by the Commission. Commission's work is not focused on France, nor on developed countries.

The Commission has now reported and its (250 page) report can be downloaded here Stiglitz:Sen Report.pdf

and the main site can be accessed here
